New cameras to catch drivers who jump red lights
Drivers jumping red lights in Dublin face being photographed and slapped with a fine under a new scheme cracking down on dangerous driving, it was revealed today.
Cameras are to be installed at three junctions as part of a pilot project jointly initiated by Dublin City Council, gardaí and the Railway Procurement Agency.
The system will be operated by an outside contractor who will send details of motorists caught not stopping to gardaí, with officers then imposing a €40 penalty.
A spokesman for Dublin City Council said the scheme will initially run for 12 months and will be reviewed and possibly extended depending on funding.
“The locations were chosen following completion of a justification report,” he said.
“The report was based on statistics on the number of accidents arising from drivers not obeying red light signal at traffic lights. Types of accidents were also examined.”
The three locations are:
* Con Colbert Road heading eastbound, just before the junction with the South Circular Road.
* On Queen Street heading southbound, just before the junction with Benburb Street.
* On Blackhall Place heading southbound, prior to junction with Benburb Street.
Dublin City Council said the first two locations were chosen by the local authority, while the third was selected by the RPA and is on the Red Luas Line.
It is expected the cameras will be in place before the end of the year, with funding coming from the National Transport Authority through the RPA.
The council said that while the pilot project will look at how driver behaviour can be altered, it warned that drivers observed breaking the red lights will be targeted by gardaí.
Dublin City Council said it will not be privy to the information provided to gardaí.
