Bruton condemns Enfield toll hike

John Bruton today condemned the National Roads Authority for deciding to introduce tolls on vehicles using the Enfield by-pass.

John Bruton today condemned the National Roads Authority for deciding to introduce tolls on vehicles using the Enfield by-pass.

The NRA proposes a toll of £1.38 for cars and £3.39 for heavy goods vehicles.

The Fine Gael TD for Meath said: "This will lead to hold-ups on the motorway at the toll booths, and to the diversion of toll avoiding traffic into the village of Enfield.

"Meanwhile anyone who wants to stop off to visit Enfield will have to be back on the road within a short period or be forced to pay a second toll.

"This will discourage them from stopping at all.

"The inspector's public hearing on tolls at Enfield was a costly and time-consuming exercise for local residents, and their submissions now appear to have been completely ignored by the NRA bureaucracy."
