Virgin Mobile aims to outstrip rivals

Virgin Mobile says it expects to grow faster than its UK rivals in 2002.

Virgin Mobile says it expects to grow faster than its UK rivals in 2002.

The company has revealed upbeat first-quarter trading figures.

It attracted 164,223 new customers in the first three months of 2002.

This brings Virgin Mobile's total customer numbers to 1,609,700.

Virgin Mobile says the first quarter of this year was its best to date for SMS activity.

Average user SMS activity increased by 29% from the same period in 2001.

Virgin Mobile is a 50:50 joint venture company between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile - formerly One2One.

Sir Richard says: "This performance is a great start to the year for us and we're confident we can continue to grow our business rapidly and profitably through the rest of 2002."
