A man extradited from the United States was remanded in custody today after he was charged with sexual offences which allegedly occurred in 1968.

The defendant, (aged 82), who cannot be named due to reporting restrictions, was charged with two counts of buggery contrary to Section 61 of the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861.

The alleged incidents happened at different locations in the west of Ireland and involve the same complainant.

Garda Inspector Michael Coppinger told Judge Denis McLoughlin that he arrested the defendant at Dublin Airport this morning after his extradition from Chicago.

The accused, who had an address in Illinois, in the US, was charged at the Bridewell Garda station in Dublin, and in reply said: “I deny the offences” and “I deny the charge.”

He was remanded in custody to appear at Loughrea District Court on Wednesday. A bail application was not made.

Defence solicitor Vincent Shannon told Judge McLoughlin that he was reserving his position to make further application at his client's next court appearance.

Judge McLoughlin imposed the reporting restrictions after noting from Inspector Coppinger that the case involved alleged sexual offences.
