Different Times: Flooding at the Lee Fields
This week’s picture from our archives shows an angler being rescued from floods at the Lee Fields, Cork in April, 1928.
In recent weeks, there has been two times the normal rainfall in most areas of Ireland.
Farmers will hope for better weather in April, which remains Ireland’s driest month generally across the country (in Met Éireann’s 30-year records), although June is the driest month in many southern parts.
Unfortunately, records were turned on their head last year, when heavy rainfall was recorded across the country in April, including 266% of the normal monthly rainfall in Co Cork.
There were 24 wet days in April, 2018, at Cork Airport.
It was the wettest April since 1940 at Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry, where the 46.2 mm of rain on April 16 was the highest April daily rainfall since 2003.
