Higgins accuses Harney of 'profound ignorance'

Labour Party TD Michael D Higgins has accused the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, of trying to stir up cheap publicity by describing peace protestors as "anti-American".

Labour Party TD Michael D Higgins has accused the Tanaiste, Mary Harney, of trying to stir up cheap publicity by describing peace protestors as "anti-American".

In a speech in Limerick earlier today, Ms Harney accused people involved in anti-war protests and humanitarian organisations of using the impending US/British war on Iraq to stoke up anti-American and anti-British feelings.

Mr Higgins, who took part in last Saturday's 100,000-strong anti-war march in Dublin, said the Tanaiste's comments were outrageous.

He said: "They indicate a profound irresponsibility and ignorance and a mischievous attempt to misconstrue a genuinely expressed humanitarian concern by 100,000 people last weekend."
