Govt criticised over shortfall of social and affordable housing

Focus Ireland is criticising the Government for failing to ensure that an adequate level of social and affordable housing is built.

Focus Ireland is criticising the Government for failing to ensure that an adequate level of social and affordable housing is built.

In a report today, the homelessness charity says such housing is only being built at one third of the level that was planned.

The shortfall is being blamed mainly on the Government's decision to water down Part Five of the Planning and Development Act.

The legislation initially required builders to ensure that 20% of all developments were social and affordable housing.

However, following lobbying from developers, the industry was given the option of handing over cash or land to the local authority in lieu of actual housing.
