The nun in charge of an old people's complex where an elderly man was found dead has described him as "lovely, quiet and popular".
Gardai today launched a murder investigation after the body of the 75-year-old man was found in an elderly people’s accommodation complex.
The man - who has been named locally as Joe O’Doherty - lived alone in his home set in the grounds of a Limerick convent.
He had apparently been beaten up and detectives believe he may have opened the front door of his bungalow to his attacker. The alert was raised when his panic button alarm signal went off.
He was named locally as Joe O’Doherty, a single man who was once a teacher in Britain.
Garda forensic experts and State Pathologist Dr John Harbison were examining the scene.
Sister Breege Mullins, who runs the complex, described Mr O’Doherty as a ‘‘lovely, quiet and popular man.’’
She added: ‘‘The other residents here are very upset at what has happened. They are also shocked and afraid.’’
Police said they were attempting to trace a man seen leaving the complex shortly before the discovery of Mr O’Doherty’s body.
