Mark Wallace has reported his sprint star Benbaun to be on schedule for the Victor Chandler Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 24.
The five-year-old gelding deserves a big sprint to fall his way after a string of consistent – if fruitless – performances already this term.
He has finished second in good company in each of his last three starts, including the Kings Stand and a Group Three at Sandown on Eclipse day.
Since that latter contest, he has been turned out for a break. But Newmarket trainer Wallace now has him back at his Sefton Lodge base.
“He was out in the field for a couple or three weeks but is back in now and looks marvellous. He goes for the Nunthorpe,” he said.
“He doesn’t need much work to get him fit. He’ll canter every day for three weeks and then do one bit of work and he will be ready to go. He is a grand horse.”
