Labour is proposing that spending by local election candidates be limited.

The party has today moved the first stage of a private members bill seeking the imposition of limits before next year's local elections.

It says the current situation leaves the way open for wealthy candidates to buy their way into office.

Labour says some candidates in the 2004 local elections were reported to have spent in excess of €40,000.
