A magnitude-6.9 earthquake shook the South American nation of Ecuador today, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake shook the South American nation of Ecuador today, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, at 6.54am (11.54am Irish Time) was felt in the nation’s capital, Quito.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centred 106 miles (171km) south-east of Quito.

But it was also very deep – about 114 miles (190km) below the surface.
