'Ireland must change attitude to drink'

Fine Gael leader Michael Noonan has said Ireland must change its attitude towards excessive drinking and encourage young people to lead fit and active lives.

Mr Noonan has urged the Taoiseach to scrap the National Stadium plans and instead spend the money it will cost on grassroots sports across the country.

“We need resources, like play areas, indoor athletics tracks, gymnasia, sports halls,” he said, “and then we also need dedicated coaching, because I believe that only something which changes the attitude to lifestyle will work.

"I don’t think prohibition works, I don’t think identity cards work, I don’t think prosecutions work; even though all of these things may play a part to combat excess drinking.”
