The latest Sunday Business Post opinion poll has shown that the current coalition has opened up a bigger lead over the Fine Gael and Labour alternative.

The Red C tracking poll shows Fianna Fáil has its highest support since this series of polls began a year ago.

Support is up three points to 42%.

Support for Fine Gael is at its lowest since the polls began, falling by two points to 21% - a lower level of support than it attained in the disastrous 2002 elections.

Support for the Labour party remained static while there was marginal changes in support for the other parties.

If the results of today's poll were replicated in the general election, the present coalition would most likely be returned to office for a further five years, and Bertie Ahern would achieve his third election victory.
