The Government is reportedly planning to introduce jail sentences for motorists caught using hand-held mobile phones while driving.

Reports today say motorists caught using mobile phones on three separate occasions will face up to three months in prison.

The draconian measure is reportedly part of Transport Minister Seamus Brennan’s plans to expand the penalty points system for motorists in the new year.

The expansion would bring several new offences under the remit of the penalty points scheme, including careless driving, dangerous overtaking and the use of a mobile while driving.
