A cafe owner in the States has filmed a freak 'sneaker' wave that took beachgoers by surprise and forced them to flee.
Steve Raplee was filming the waves coming over the rocks during a storm in Oregon when the sneaker wave, or king wave, sprung up out of nowhere and sent people scurrying for cover.
As he runs from the surge, Mr Raplee can be heard shouting: “Get out of the way!”
Thankfully, everyone escapes and Mr Raplee then turns his camera onto the deluge as it quickly floods the area where everyone was standing, just moments before.
In the clip, you can hear Mr Raplee saying: “Whoa, that was scary. That’s a big sneaker wave. My God, that’s huge, I just got out of the way. It would have taken anybody in its path."
“Everybody made it out”.
A sneaker wave is a disproportionately large coastal wave which often appears without warning during a large swell.
