A new report shows maternity units run by midwives are just as safe as those that have obstetricians in charge.

There are only two such units in the country - at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth, and at Cavan General hospital.

The report from the HSE studied 1,563 who had babies in the northeast from 2004 to 2007.
