Govt - young people hold key to Nice

The Government is targeting young voters ahead of the Nice Treaty Referendum in an effort to secure a yes vote.

It was announced yesterday afternoon that the poll will take place on Saturday, October 19.

It's thought the decision to hold a weekend ballot was in a bid to secure the younger vote.

The date was welcomed by the National Youth Council, which had lobbied for a Saturday vote.

However, with only four weeks of campaigning available, concerns over the ability of both sides of the debate to disseminate information have arisen.

Labour leader Ruairi Quinn has expressed reservations over the campaign length, as has Fine Gael's campaign director, John Bruton.

The Greens have questioned the ability of the Referendum Commission to provide balanced and accurate information to the entire voting population in such a short time frame.

Several recent polls show the majority of the electorate either don't understand the issues involved or are indifferent.
