At least 14 people were killed and 19 critically injured today in a scramble to flee a crowded Chicago nightclub after someone released pepper spray or mace.
There were more than 1,500 people in the two storey Epitome Night Club when someone released the spray into the air around 2am (8am Irish time), said Fire Commander Will Knight.
“There was some kind of congestion from within the establishment. People were heading for the door,” said police Officer Ozzie Rodriguez.
Club patrons said people were trampled in a rush for the door.
Police said 14 people were killed. Knight said 33 people were injured – 19 critically.
Medical teams from local hospitals responded to the site, along with several ambulances and paramedics.
