Dutch police launched a manhunt today after a 13-year-old boy was shot dead after throwing a snowball at a passing car.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and collected forensic evidence around an underground station in Rotterdam where the incident happened. The boy died in hospital yesterday after being shot in the head.

He had been playing in the snow with friends at the time, police said, but they would not confirm reports a driver had opened fire at the group after a snowball hit his car.

“They are looking for the suspect and a motive,” said police spokeswoman Brigitte van der Poel.
