The board of the National Economic and Social Council is meeting this afternoon to set out a road map for renewed talks between the social partners.

Yesterday, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions called off a national day of protest planned for next Monday after being invited to fresh partnership talks by the Taoiseach.

The unions, employers and Government representatives are expected to begin discussions in the coming days on an economic recovery plan.

ICTU has already put forward a 10-point plan focusing on the need to ensure fairness in any measures to overcome the current crisis in the public finances.

The employers' body IBEC says a lengthy pay freeze will have to form part of any agreement.
