A murder investigation is underway after a man was shot dead in west Dublin.

The 20-year-old man was sitting in a car in Moorfield Avenue in Clondalkin, at about 9pm last night when a gunman opened fire.

He was shot at least five times in his upper body and head and was rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he later died.

The scene of the shooting remains sealed off this morning. A garda technical team is due there later this morning to carry out an examination.

A post mortem will take place on the body later.

It was the second gangland attack to take place in Dublin yesterday.

In an earlier attack, a 23-year-old man was shot in the shoulder in the Cabra House pub north Dublin at around 1.30pm. It is not believed the incidents are linked.
