The Labour Party has called on Justice Minister Michael McDowell to rethink his plans to make it illegal for gardaí to disclose sensitive information to the media.

Party spokesman Joe Costello today described the minister's plans as "savage" and said he hoped there was no connection between the proposals and an incident last year when details of an attack on Mr McDowell's son were leaked to journalists.

Professor Niamh Brennan, Mr McDowell's wife, said over the weekend that she would be reluctant to report a personal attack to the gardaí for fear it would be leaked to the media.
