The Telecommunications Regulator, Etain Doyle, today reconfirmed eircom, Vodafone and 02 as operators with Significant Market Power (SMP) in the Irish telecommunications market following a review of market shares for 2001.
An operator designated as having Significant Market Power must comply with certain legal obligations by adhering to the principles of non-discrimination, transparency and cost orientation in the following broad categories: interconnection, access, quality of service, accounting separation and cost oriented tariffs.
The review shows progress in the telecommunications market in Ireland since the first review was carried out in 1999.
Eircom's share of the fixed public telephony services market now stands at 86% compared with 89% in 2000 and 95% in 1998/1999.
Other licenced operators now provide 15% of leased lines directly on their networks and account for 12% of the fixed telephony network market.
Esat and Worldcom have increased their shares of own network supplied services, reflecting the development of their networks.
