European Parliament president Pat Cox has urged the leaders of EU member states to reach a compromise agreement on the proposed EU Constitution during talks in Brussels this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the talks, Mr Cox urged individuals to overcome national differences and agree the text of the constitution "in a spirit of European compromise".

Mr Cox said he understood the reasons why each member state had their own "red lines" in relation to negotiations on the document.

However, he added: "We need to ensure that the red lines are not so extensive that we cannot see the black print underneath."
