McEnaney leaves Meath post
Seamus McEnaney has resigned as Meath senior football manager, just days after he was nominated for the vacant Monaghan position.
McEnaney was true to his word when he suggested after Meath's All-Ireland SFC exit last Saturday to Laois that we would make a decision on his managerial future "within five days".
It now seems clear that he wants to return to managing his native county. It emerged earlier this week that McEnaney is one of six nominees to replace Eamonn McEneaney as manager of Monaghan.
'Banty' had a successful stint as Monaghan boss between 2005 and 2010, helping them reach two Ulster finals, make an All-Ireland quarter-final appearance and establish themselves as a Division 1 team.
In a statement released last night, he said: "To whom it may concern, I am stepping down as Meath senior football team manager with immediate effect.
"I want to thank my management team and the Meath players for their huge effort, commitment and loyalty they have given me over the past two years.
"I want to thank the Meath County Board, the Meath supporters and everyone involved in the GAA in Co Meath."
McEnaney was in charge of the Royals for two years and almost lost his job in April after they suffered relegation to Allianz League Division 3.
He survived a County Board bid to oust him from the role but he was not expected to be asked to complete the final year of a three-year term, despite helping Meath reach the recent Leinster final.
There will be heightened speculation that the Corduff Gaels clubman is set to return to the Monaghan hotseat.
The Farney men were also relegated from Division 2 this year and will play Meath in the third tier of the league in 2013.
