Xonen, an Irish R&D company, that develops next generation optical disc storage technology, has announced that its R&D programme has developed optical wafer technology, positioned to become the new industry platform for next generation optical discs, such as DVD and new High Density formats.

Xonen's platform will allow global media manufacturing companies to manufacture products at quality levels never achieved before. As a result of this development, the company plans to recruit up to 60 people in order to expand its manufacturing capacity over the next 12 months.

Xonen has developed a manufacturing system that allows global manufacturers of next generation Optical Media to make the glass wafer potion of the process. The company's system was successfully launched at an international industry trade show in Frankfurt earlier this month. The system is being demonstrated to international media manufacturing companies in the company's clean room environment.

The development of Xonen's manufacturing facility will take place at its headquarters at Knock International Airport in Co Mayo. The company now employs 20 people, mainly scientists or engineers.
