Asylum seekers to be transferred from Mosney centre

The Department of Justice is today starting to transfer over 100 asylum seekers from their accommodation in Mosney, Co Meath.

Capacity at the centre is being reduced from 800 to 650, with the Department planning to move 111 single men and women to locations in Dublin city centre to save money.

The move has been greeted with opposition by asylum seekers and supporters' groups, who say the residents of the centre are being unnecessarily uprooted.

Rosanna Flynn of Residents Against Racism says those affected are being moved to cramped, unsuitable conditions.

"The accommodation will be very overcrowded," Ms Flynn said.

"It could be up to four people sharing a room - it's a Victorian building with many, many stairs, no lift - there are really insufficient bathrooms and facilities there.

"It's very much a downgrading."
