Tourists to pay homage to humble burger
The world’s first pilgrimage to trace the origins of the burger is to be launched, spanning eight countries, 16 cities and three continents, it was announced today.
The plan by fast food giant Burger King follows a growing trend for “gastro-tourism”, with more and more Britons wanting a holiday based on food.
The Burger Pilgrimage Trip will take 35 days to complete, costing a “whopping” £3,400 (€3,800), although smaller, bite-sized breaks will be available from £149 (€166).
Burger King said burgers started as a meatball in Classical Roman times, with more sophisticated versions being developed during Medieval times.
Sarah Power, marketing director of Burger King, UK and Ireland, said: “Contrary to popular opinion, the burger has both an interesting and surprising history, which this new trip highlights. As a company, we have over 50 years of experience making some of the finest burgers on the high street but now customers can explore all the other cities that have made the burger into the food icon that it is today.”
Celia Pronto, marketing director of STA Travel, which is organising the trips, said: “It seems that our taste for foreign food and travel has really developed over the years, so it’s great to see that so many of us are now travelling abroad for love of our favourite food.”
