A passenger train derailed in southwestern Pakistan today, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others, officials said.

Jalil Ahmad, chief controller of Pakistan Railways, said eight carriages of the Quetta Express left the tracks as the train crossed a bridge near Sibi, 90 miles east of Quetta.

The 12 carriage express train had left Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad, bound for Quetta, he said.

At least 12 bodies were recovered from the wreckage and about 70 injured passengers were taken to local hospitals, he added.

“At this stage we can’t say what was the cause of this incident,” he said. At the site residents and rescue workers scrambled to help the injured.
