Jamaica reported a record 1,135 murders this year, fuelled by drug trafficking and gang violence, police say.

The toll is a 28% increase over 2000's 887 killings. The former record in the Caribbean country of 2.6 million people was 1,038 murders in 1997.

Detective Sergeant Jubert Llewellyn blames the increase on an influx of drugs in Jamaica.

He says the country is increasingly being used by traffickers as a shipping point.

Another factor was fighting between gangs with clashing political loyalties in the capital, Kingston.
