The transfer listing of every player by Shamrock Rovers in a cost-cutting measure has already sparked a transfer scramble among other clubs in the League.
Star player Pat McCourt is attracting most attention with Derry City, Drogheda United and St Patrick's Athletic all interested as are Portadown and Motherwell.
Bohemians are interested in former player Jason McGuinness while his defensive partner Jason Gavin is being watched closely by Derry. Winger Mark Rutherford is on St Pats wanted list and English club Rushden and Diamonds are tracking Willo McDonagh.
Shamrock Rovers have been forced to put their entire squad up for sale as the club look to slash costs by almost half in order to stay in business.
With a weekly budget exceeding €20,000, Rovers have been forced to cut costs meaning that every player is up for sale. The decision was made by the club’s steering committee which is in charge while the club remains in examinership.
Manager Roddy Collins admitted that the club had little choice but to cut costs though he fears that it has doomed Rovers, already bottom of the table following an eight-point deduction for errors in the club licence application, to relegation.
“We’re looking at relegation. At this moment in time, I cannot see any other future for us,” admitted Collins. “But we’ll never give up and give it a go. To continue, we’re going to have to cut our budget in half and that means we’ll be operating off a smaller budget than probably the top three in the First Division.”
“The decision was made by the examiner and steering committee because saving Shamrock Rovers Football Club is much more important than saving Shamrock Rovers football team,” he said.
“I agree with then but it is frustrating because I had to work so hard to get those players in. It is a change from a few weeks ago when I was going to buy (Northern Ireland international) Gary Hamilton to now only being able to buy kids.”
