Pettersson holds narrow lead

Carl Pettersson held a one-stroke lead halfway through the final round at the £2.5m Wyndham Championship today.

Pettersson picked up two birdies on the front nine at Sedgefield to improve to 21 under, but he could not shake off the persistent Scott McCarron, who gathered three birdies before the turn.

It appeared to be a two-man race, with JJ Henry in third place, back in the clubhouse on a 16-under 264, after a 62 that included eight birdies.

Pettersson, a Swede, is playing for more than his third PGA Tour victory.

He also has an eye on making the European Ryder Cup team with only two more weeks before the line-up is finalised.

Even if he wins here, Pettersson will not be an automatic selection unless he has another strong showing next week, but he would be a contender for one of Nick Faldo’s two captain’s picks.
