Boys from Brazil still to impress

It says it all about the pressure on Brazil that despite such a comprehensive victory the second question coach Luiz Felipe Scolari faced was how can he improve the team.

Most pundits would be content with a 4-0 win, which together with a 2-1 success in their first Group C game means Brazil are virtually assured of a place in the last 16 of the World Cup.

But then this is Brazil we’re talking about when even the best never seems good enough for some.

Scolari brushed off the question contemptuously, although he did admit Brazil must not get carried away by beating Turkey and China.

‘‘I think the team is okay and how can there be problems when we’ve played the way we’ve played today?’’ he said.

‘‘I think Brazil has played with 11 not so difficult opponents. We have a lot of experience compared to them and that’s why we are getting better results than our rivals at the moment, like Italy, France and Argentina.’’

China began well before Brazil’s goal rush and Scolari claims this was because he had told his side to bide their time.

Roberto Carlos opened the scoring on 15 minutes in the Jeju Stadium with his first goal from a free-kick for Brazil since his famous banana effort at Le Tournoi in 1997.

Scolari said: ‘‘We knew that China would start with pressure so we decided to wait a little bit for 10 or 15 minutes and then we started to play our game.

‘‘We knew we were technically superior to China and we also have more experience.

‘‘So we played the game the way we know how and the game went well for us.

‘‘But we’re not thinking about the second round yet because we haven’t qualified.

‘‘Turkey can win tomorrow so we will have to see what happens. Then we can worry about who we may face in the second round.’’

The goals followed at regular intervals after Roberto Carlos’ 30-yard piledriver and on 32 minutes Ronaldinho centred from the left for Rivaldo to sweep home his second goal of the tournament from a couple of yards out.

The third came just before half-time when Li Weifeng tugged Ronaldo over in the area and Ronaldinho scored from the penalty spot.

Ronaldo finally got in on the act in the 55th minute when he tapped home Cafu’s cross at the back post to complete the scoring.

Chinese coach Bora Milutinovic must be sick of the sight of Brazil and he has now lost to them three times at the World Cup with three different teams.

None of his sides - Costa Rica at Italia 90, the United States at USA 94 and now China - could even manage a goal let alone a point and this was his biggest drubbing at Brazil’s hands.

However, the Yugoslav refused to be too downhearted and after China’s poor showing on their World Cup debut in their defeat to Costa Rica, he took solace from this performance.

Indeed China came close to that first elusive World Cup goal when Zhao Junzhe hit the post.

‘‘I thought we played well tactically and showed a lot of determination,’’ he said.

‘‘You need to understand where Brazil are and where we are. Against Costa Rica we made too many mistakes, but against Brazil we played well.

‘‘We need to repeat the way we played this time if we are to have some chance against the Turkish team in our last match.’’
