New York’s bid to host part of the Oscars has been postponed.
Robert de Niro, Spike Lee and Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein were among those hoping to bring a section of the Academy Awards to the Big Apple.
The high-profile New Yorkers saw the ceremony, to be hosted by Steve Martin, as an opportunity to boost the city’s post-September 11 recovery efforts.
But the New York City Host Committee said it has now decided to put the plan on hold.
“When New York City does things we do it right, and we do it big...for a variety of reasons [we’re] not submitting a proposal to bring the Academy Awards here in ’03,” said a spokesman.
He added: “We think it’s very important to our city – economically and emotionally, especially since September 11- to attract big events.”
The city has landed the 2004 Grammys and is bidding for the 2012 Olympics and the 2008 Super Bowl.
The Academy is contracted to hold the Oscars at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood until 2022.
