Hibernian Insurance has launched a new scheme offering cheaper insurance for young drivers who take a free one-day training course.

Those who succeed in the course will get a 20% discount on their premiums.

A 10% discount will also be offered to those who refrain from driving between 11pm and 6am ever day.

Hibernian has started the scheme with an initial 1,000 places available in Dublin, Cork and Galway.

The move has been made at a time of growing concern over the level of road accident fatalities, particularly among young drivers.

More than 400 people died on Irish roads last year and, in population ratio terms, the deaths rate is almost twice that in Britain, with 11 deaths per 100,000 during 2000.
