Golf: Whale I never as Clarke looks to ease frustration

Three killer whales have put Darren Clarke in the mood to do some damage of his own at the Murphy’s Irish Open starting in Cork tomorrow.

Three killer whales have put Darren Clarke in the mood to do some damage of his own at the Murphy’s Irish Open starting in Cork tomorrow.

The house where the Ulsterman is staying for the £1million tournament belongs to a harbourmaster and the whales appeared right on cue when he was told to look out for them.

‘‘They were a fantastic sight - I spent about half an hour watching them,’’ said Clarke, who unfortunately could not share the experience with his young sons Tyrone and Conor, who are at home in Surrey.

The reminder of a magical world beyond golf eased Clarke’s impatience to get back to winning ways after a month when he feels his results have not reflected how well he has been playing.

‘‘I’m in between happy and frustrated,’’ he added. ‘‘My game is very good, but I’ve not been scoring as well as I should.

‘‘Hopefully we won’t have to play in the dark here, so I might have a better chance.’’

That was a reference to the US Open two weeks ago. Clarke wanted to stop late in his second round, but when told to play on he hit two balls into water, ran up a triple bogey eight and never got back in the hunt.
