An inquiry has begun into the death of a 12-year-old girl who was found hanging in her bedroom on Christmas Day.

Georgina Phelan was discovered at her home on the Luke’s Lane Estate in Hebburn, South Tyneside, by distraught family members.

An ambulance was called but the crew was unable to revive the child.

Northumbria Police, who are investigating the death, have ruled out any suspicious circumstances.

They said inquiries were “ongoing” and a post-mortem has been carried out.

Detective Inspector Rob Coulson said: “A tragedy like this would be devastating to a family at any time of the year but on that day of all days it was particularly shocking.

“No-one else was involved but we cannot say for certain what happened until we have investigated further.”
