Mystery surrounded Sir Clive Woodward’s future as England coach tonight, after he left Twickenham following a four-hour meeting with senior Rugby Football Union figures.

Woodward told media outside Rugby House in Twickenham that he had not handed in his resignation when he left the building at around 8.10pm.

“As far as I am concerned I am still England coach,” he said.

“I have not handed in my resignation.”

This appears to contradict earlier signals from Woodward, who announced at lunchtime he would be resigning.

The English RFU have yet to make an official comment following today’s events, and there is also no indication as to whether a planned Woodward press conference tomorrow will take place.

Woodward’s legal representatives were still locked in a meeting with RFU chief executive Francis Baron and management board chairman Graeme Cattermole after the England coach had left.
