An Bord Pleanala has approved the construction of a controversial toll plaza on the Drogheda by-pass in Co Meath.

The proposal to introduce tolls on the main Dublin to Belfast road was sanctioned without modification, despite an appeal.

Fine Gael’s Fergus O’Dowd said: “In Drogheda, we feel that this is putting up a wall around our town, that it will prevent ease of access by people coming in and out of our town. They’ll be charged to come in and charged to go out and we’re very unhappy with that.”

He called on the Government to intervene in the matter.
