Limerick skipper Ryan retires

TJ Ryan has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling just days after Limerick's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final defeat to Cork.

Ryan, who captained Limerick this season, is to bow out after 12 years with the senior panel.

The 32-year-old's final game might have ended on a controversial note as he was seen to raise his hurl into the face of Cork defender John Gardiner last Saturday.

But Dublin referee Eamonn Morris was alerted to the incident and booked both players, meaning that the GAA's Central Disciplinary Committee cannot review the case.

A player of immense versatility, Ryan made his debut as a corner forward against Cork in 1994 - he played in that year's All-Ireland final defeat to Offaly.

Stints in the half-back and half-forward lines and latterly at full-back followed for the Garryspillane clubman, whose brother Donie is to forage on with Limerick.

The Ryans, along with their other brother Davy, were central to Garryspillane's first ever senior county title win last year.

TJ and Donie also had a hand in guiding Limerick through to April's National League Division One final, which they lost to Kilkenny.
