RGDATA, the association representing independent grocers, has reacted angrily to a report which shows that Ireland now has the second highest cost of living in the 12-nation eurozone.

The Government report recommends an examination of the Groceries Order, which limits competition in the sector and the growth of low-cost superstores.

The report also says that that highest recent price increases were recorded in doctors’ and dentists’ fees, restaurants and pubs.

Ailish Forde, director general of RGDATA, said independent grocers and retailers are not to blame for these price rises and she expressed amazement that the report recommends a review of the Groceries Order.
