The Bishop of Waterford has expressed his regret for the way in which the church has handled child sexual abuse cases in Ireland.

In his Christmas message Dr William Lee said that his thoughts are with those victims of abuse over this period.

He also acknowledged that the response of Irish Bishops to this situation has been inadequate.

"I have no hesitation in saying that it has been the most difficult year of my priesthood and I'm particularly conscious of the hurt and pain that is felt by victims of child sexual abuse by priests and the religious. I greatly regret that we Bishops have made mistakes...and I'm truly sorry for that." he said.
