FA clarify Keegan charge
The Football Association has attempted to clarify the charge being levelled against Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan.
Keegan himself appeared confused about the precise nature of the charge yesterday when he revealed he would be writing a letter of apology to referee Steve Dunn for the comments he made privately in the tunnel after Sunday’s 4-3 defeat at Newcastle, but said he would fight any FA attempt to fine him for his emotional post-match comments to the media.
Now the FA have confirmed the “abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour” do relate “exclusively to his words and behaviour directly to Steve Dunn immediately after the final whistle.”
They have also confirmed Keegan will face no disciplinary action over his post-match media outburst.
Keegan has a previously unblemished disciplinary record, so should escape with a fine over his four-letter tirade at Dunn, which he admitted yesterday might have been expressed in a slightly different manner.
“I shall write a letter of apology to the referee for the way I spoke to him,” said Keegan.
“There were a lot worse things said publicly over the weekend but I could have articulated my thoughts better and what I get for that I will probably deserve.
“It is the first time I have been in trouble, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
“Maybe they will look to make an example of me but I hope not. I have always tried to represent football in the right way and I don’t think I would deserve that.”
