A farmer who was gored to death by a bull on his farm in rural Mayo will be laid to rest today.

The 38-year-old lost his fight for life in hospital earlier this week after the incident near Ballindine.

Tomas Tierney was attacked by a Fresian bull when he entered a field to milk his cows on his farm near the border with Galway.

It is understood his mother raised the alarm when he failed to return home and neighbours later discovered him.

Efforts were made to save him before he was rushed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where he died on Wednesday from his injuries.

His father Tom died in a farming accident on the same farm 19 years ago.

Tomas Tierney's funeral Mass will be held this morning at St Joseph's Church in Carras.

His is the 20th farm-related death so far this year. Thirteen were recorded throughout 2009.

The Irish Farmers Association has appealed for greater safety awareness on farms across the country.
