Premiership: Dyer happy to stay put

England international Kieron Dyer is ready to pledge his long-term future to Newcastle.

England international Kieron Dyer is ready to pledge his long-term future to Newcastle.

The 23-year-old has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal with the Magpies but has been repeatedly linked with a move to Leeds and Manchester United.

However, with a shinbone injury now seemingly behind him, Dyer appears poised to sign a new contract at St James’ Park.

He said: ‘‘My agent and the chairman have had preliminary talks about a new contract.

‘‘What I want to do first is get to the same level of performance I was showing last season and then, hopefully, the contract will look after itself.

‘‘If the deal is right for me, of course I’ll be happy to sign. I can’t think of any reason why not.

‘‘I got a lot of stick because I said I hoped the club shared the same ambition as me. But I think that goes to show that I care for the club and want to do well.

‘‘The chairman told me he was the most ambitious in the League and talked about the players he was going to buy and he’s stuck to his word.’’
