A ferry carrying nearly 400 passengers has sunk in a storm in southern Bangladesh.

A ferry carrying nearly 400 passengers has sunk in a storm in southern Bangladesh.

Two bodies were found shortly after dawn floating near the scene of the accident in Chandpur district, 64 miles east of the capital, Dhaka.

Up to 100 people are reported to have survived after the triple-deck ferry MV Salahuddin went down, local police chief Bakhtiar Alam said.

"We will not know how many people have drowned until the ferry is pulled out from under the water," the officer said.

The sunken ferry was traveling from Dhaka to southern Patuakhali 95 miles from Dhaka.

Dozens of passengers swam to shore or were rescued by other ferries, according to a passenger on another boat.

The survivors swam to shore or were rescued by passing boats or fishing trawlers.

A rescue vessel from state-run Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation reached the site and rescuers were trying to locate the sunken boat in the river.
