The UN Security Council has authorised more than 20,000 troops and police to be sent to the war-ravaged Sudanese region where more than 200,000 have been killed and more than 1.5m people face a humanitarian disaster after three years of fighting.

Minister Ahern has urged the country's government to allow them in as soon as possible. Sudan has rejected the resolution on the grounds that it would violate its sovereignty.
