Govt U-turns on opinion polls ban

The Government is to drop the proposed ban on opinion polls.

A Government source said the cabinet has taken the decision because political consensus on the ban had collapsed.

The move follows the U-turn on the proposed end to the dual mandate, which was also contained in the Local Government Bill.

Today, a Government spokesperson said the cabinet had dropped the ban because support had collapsed.

The ban was originally proposed by Fine Gael but they opposed it in the Dail and the Seanad along with Labour and the Greens because of penalties for breaching the ban.
