Irish families with relatives in the United States are being urged to remain calm.
Telephone lines to New York are jammed with worried families from around the world.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin is continuing to monitor the situation and they have released further numbers for worried relatives to call.
The numbers are 1800 401 800 and 1800 385 858.
Thousands of people are feared dead after the catastrophes.
