Rescuers trying to reach a group of US coal miners trapped 240ft down an underground shaft have drilled 100ft towards the chamber.
They are drilling a rescue hole to try to pull the men to safety.
Work is continuing amid intermittent rain and lightning.
Officials had hoped to reach the chamber by dawn, but said progress had been slowed by rock and soil conditions.
"We have not given up hope on the miners. We are working very diligently to get them out," said state official Betsy Mallison.
Rescuers had been encouraged by a tapping sound originating from the mine.
Air is being pumped into the chamber through a much smaller hole, hoping it will buy them enough time to save the miners who have been trapped in a 4ft-high shaft since Wednesday night.
The miners were trapped after apparently breaching the wall of a flooded and abandoned mine next to them, releasing more than 50 million gallons of water into the shaft where they were working.
